CHAPTER 01

What Zero-Click Actually Means

A zero-click search is exactly what it sounds like: someone searches, and no click to a website follows. That happens in three main ways.

  • The answer is on the page. A featured snippet, knowledge panel, calculator, weather box, sports score or AI Overview satisfies the need.
  • The searcher refines. They didn't like the results, so they type a new query.
  • The searcher leaves. They got distracted, changed their mind, or went elsewhere, like an app or an assistant.

Only the first one is really about Google answering for you, but all three show up in the statistics, which is worth remembering when someone quotes a scary number.

Not every zero-click is a lost visit

Some of those searches were never going to send a click. Nobody needs to visit a website to learn the time in Tokyo. The real question is which of your target queries are affected.

02

CHAPTER 02

What the Research Shows, Honestly

Several clickstream studies have looked at this. A widely cited 2024 study by SparkToro, using Datos panel data, estimated that well over half of Google searches in the US and EU ended without a click to the open web. Other studies with different methods land on different numbers.

I trust the direction more than the decimal. Every method has limits: panels are samples, mobile and desktop behave differently, and definitions of a "click" vary. But the trend is consistent. More searches are resolved on the results page than a decade ago, and AI answers push further in that direction.

warningWATCH OUT

Don't use a headline zero-click statistic to predict your own traffic. Your mix of queries is what matters. A B2B software site and a recipe site live in completely different zero-click realities.

lightbulbPRO TIP

Your own Search Console data is the best reality check. Compare impressions and clicks for query groups over time, especially after AI Overviews appeared for your topics.

03

CHAPTER 03

Which Queries Lose the Most Clicks

High zero-click risk

  • Simple definitions and quick facts.
  • Unit conversions, calculations, time zones and weather.
  • Celebrity ages, sports scores, opening hours.
  • Simple how-to questions with a one-line answer.
  • Navigational queries for big brands, where the searcher uses a sitelink or panel.

Low zero-click risk

  • Complex how-to tasks with steps, nuance and troubleshooting.
  • Commercial comparisons and purchase research.
  • Queries that need tools, templates, calculators you own, or downloads.
  • High-trust topics where people want a source they can verify.
  • Local service queries where the searcher wants to call, book or visit.

If a sentence can satisfy it, plan for no click

When a query can be fully answered in one or two sentences, assume a growing share of searchers won't visit. Build your traffic strategy on queries that need more.

04

CHAPTER 04

The Strategy Shift: Choosing Better Targets

You don't abandon informational content. You rebalance, so your traffic and revenue don't depend on queries a summary can handle.

  1. 1Audit your top pages by query type. Which of your traffic depends on quick-answer queries?
  2. 2Protect pages that convert. Commercial and transactional pages usually carry less zero-click exposure. Strengthen them first.
  3. 3Build depth where summaries fall short. Comparisons, frameworks, original data, case studies and tools.
  4. 4Turn quick answers into doorways. Answer the short question clearly, then offer the next step: the calculator, the checklist, the full guide.
  5. 5Invest in brand demand. Branded searches click through. Every channel that builds brand recall feeds search.

Example

A personal finance site lost clicks on "what is an emergency fund." Its calculator page, "how much should my emergency fund be," kept growing, because people wanted their own number. They shifted resources from definitions to interactive tools and saw revenue hold steady despite lower informational traffic.

The search intent play helps you classify which queries still send visits.

CHAPTER 05

Winning Visibility Inside the Results Page

For queries that will stay zero-click, the goal changes from traffic to presence. Being the brand shown matters.

  • Featured snippets. Answer-first formatting makes you the quoted source. See the featured snippets play.
  • AI Overviews. Being cited inside the AI answer puts your brand next to the response. See winning AI Overviews.
  • Local pack and Business Profile. For local businesses, calls and direction requests happen without a website visit. See the local SEO play.
  • Knowledge panels and branded SERPs. Own how your brand looks when people search your name. See brand SEO.
  • Images and video. Visual results often appear above organic links and can carry your branding.
A mention without a click is still a billboard. The brands that show up in the answer are the brands people search for next month.Shmul

CHAPTER 06

Measuring Success When Clicks Fall

If you only report organic sessions, zero-click will look like failure even when your visibility is growing. Add these to your reporting.

  • Impressions for key query groups in Search Console.
  • Branded search volume and branded clicks, a lagging signal that visibility is building demand.
  • SERP feature ownership: snippets, local pack positions, image and video placements.
  • AI citations and mentions for your core topics.
  • Assisted and direct conversions, since many zero-click exposures convert later through another channel.
  • Calls, direction requests and bookings from local listings.

lightbulbPRO TIP

When presenting to leadership, show impressions and branded demand next to clicks. The SEO reporting play has a structure that makes this story clear.

warningWATCH OUT

Don't let falling informational clicks trigger panic cuts. Check whether conversions and branded demand held. Traffic you lost may never have been worth much.

07

CHAPTER 07

Zero-Click for Local and Brand Searches

Some of the most valuable zero-click searches never touch your website, and that's completely fine.

Local searches

When someone searches for a plumber nearby, they often call directly from the local pack, request directions, or check opening hours. None of that is a website visit, but every one of those actions can be a customer. Your Google Business Profile is effectively a landing page.

  • Keep categories, hours, services and photos complete and accurate.
  • Respond to reviews, since they shape both rankings and choices.
  • Track calls, direction requests and bookings as conversions, not just website clicks.

Branded searches

When people search your brand name, the results page itself is your shop window: sitelinks, knowledge panel, reviews, social profiles and news. Many of these searches end with a click on a sitelink, or with no click at all because the answer, like your phone number, is right there.

Example

A dental clinic's website traffic from search dipped slightly year over year, and the owner assumed SEO was failing. Their Business Profile data showed calls from search had grown substantially. The clicks moved from the website to the call button, and appointments went up.

lightbulbPRO TIP

Build a monthly view that combines website clicks with Business Profile calls, direction requests and bookings. It tells a far more accurate story for local businesses.

CHAPTER 08

Future-Proofing Your Search Strategy

  1. 1Own something a summary can't copy: data, tools, experience, community.
  2. 2Be the named source, not just a ranking URL. Clear entities and consistent mentions help.
  3. 3Build direct relationships: email, communities, and returning visitors reduce your dependence on any single results page.
  4. 4Diversify discovery: YouTube, AI assistants, Discover and social all feed demand.
  5. 5Keep measuring your own data, not industry averages.

Search is becoming a place where decisions happen

The results page and AI answers increasingly do the first part of the job. Your job is to be present there, and to be worth the click when someone needs more.
